Yarn Citizen was born out of Laura Zander’s dedication to sustainability and her passion for high-quality yarn. During a trip to the fair trade mills of Peru, Laura was captivated by the female artisans who skillfully sorted freshly sheared fiber with just a touch. As she observed the process, Laura noticed something troubling—mounds of high-quality wool and alpaca remnants were piling up. These leftover fibers, produced by the mills each year, were often destined for landfills despite their luxurious quality.
Determined to make a change, Laura saw an opportunity to give these fibers a second life. She asked that the leftover wool and alpaca be spun into new yarns, thus creating Yarn Citizen. By repurposing these beautiful materials, Laura aimed to bridge the gap between high-quality yarn and accessible pricing—making something sustainable, luxurious, and affordable for all.
