A lovely customer contacted me through our online chat on last week asking What makes your store special? As she pointed out, all yarn stores offer yarn and needles, so how are we different? I absolutely loved the honesty and candor of this question. I mean, she's absolutely right - all yarn stores carry yarn and needles, and a whole lot more, Many of us even carry some of the same yarns. So how are we different? This was such a wonderful question, and I spent quite a bit of time on my response. She was pleased with my answer (which you can read at the end of this post, if you like) but it was not quite an adequate answer.
What I did not say, but would have, had it not been late at night, was that as much as anything we have or do here at the shop, it is our customers that make Crazy for Ewe special. It is your visit, your smile, your participation in our events. It is your connection to us and to each other that makes us special. There is a tangible sense of connectedness among everyone that is part of Crazy for Ewe. There is a warmth and inclusiveness that new people sense and are drawn to.
I see it in the shop and around the table whether it's in a class or a spontaneous gathering. In Club Crazy for Ewe, although most of us are hundreds, if not thousands, of miles apart, there is a genuine community that transcends the limitations of Zoom. We are connected and genuinely care for one another fat beyond our shared passion for knitting. That is a gift that each of you bring, and it is what really makes Crazy for Ewe special.
I thought it especially appropriate to share this message with you today, and to wish a happy Valentines Day to you, my awesome friends and knitting family. I am so grateful to have you in my life. You are each so very special.
Warmly,
Ellen

I wish I had a yarn store, in my area, that is as welcoming as yours seems to be. Being a newish knitter, to have a community like yours locally would be incredible. You seem so genuine and I really appreciate the content of your newsletters. I have learned so much and been so encouraged by them. Thank you

I keep seeing the words “community” and “team” in the comments. These words r what a lonely person wants to see and hear. I believe this community is on fire and maybe, just maybe we can save a lonely person. They will feel treasured and wanted.

I would add that I enjoy sitting at “the table” to knit and engage in conversation with the staff and other customers. I often learn a new technique or hear about a different approach to a project. I also enjoy seeing projects others are working on and get ideas for my next pattern, yarn choice or color combination. The staff members are extremely talented and helpful in all aspects of knitting, including how to fix a problem or interpret a pattern. I have been to other stores where I can buy yarn, but at Crazy for Ewe, I walk out of the store with the right yarn for the pattern, confident that my project will become a piece that I enjoy wearing.

Other attributes that make your store special are the encyclopedic knitting knowledge of you and your staff, along with your extraordinary encouragement to solve knitting problems and to keep trying new things. I have applied your wisdom in other areas of my life as I’ve approached a new or daunting task: “I can drive a CAR.” (Therefore I can figure out that puzzling pattern.) or “It’s YARN.” (Therefore, life won’t end if I need to rip it out and start over.) Thanks for being there, for greeting me warmly when I show up, and for teaching all of us so capably.

Being the odd “man” out, I feel that there is a community in the shop that is hard to find these days. I have never felt like I did not belong and even though I do not spend as much time in the shop as many nor have the skills, I know that I am considered part of the Crazy for Ewe community. While the shop brings us together because of a common interest, everyone I have ever encountered is kind, caring and genuinely interested in my little contribution to this “community” for which I am thankful.
Happy Everyday and Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

So very well put. I would only add – the social skills, demeanor and dedication of the staff. Rarely does one come away from a retail experience feeling so special, so ‘seen’. You and your team embody the idea, ‘make the circle wider’. Thank you♥️
