Sunday and Monday we did inventory at both shops. As I said in the newsletter, this thing has been weighing heavily on me. You know how you have this general anxiety about something and you're not even sure the cause until some event has passed and you suddenly feel this existential calm. I guess you only realize the full extent of your burden after you have set it down. Wouldn't that make a great fortune cookie?
Anyway, inventory wasn't as difficult as it could have been, and it felt really great to get accurate numbers into both systems. Now when we call the other shop to see if there's another skein of something you need, we can trust what the computer tells us. It will take quite a bit of discipline to keep the computers accurate, but I'm really going to try. New systems are in place to track yarn and needles as the go in and out, which is a start.
It was also wonderful just to move the yarn around. I do not consider myself "New Age" but I do believe that there is some truth to the concepts, many of which are rooted in ancient philosophies and traditions such as feng sui. For instance, according to feng sui there is stuck energy that accumulates around clutter and stacks of things. Moving and organizing releases that energy for positive use. Isn't that cool! I found that organizing the books and patterns and yarns in La Plata was extremely energizing and empowering. After we were all done, Sandy did a space clearing ceremony to move bad energy out of the La Plata shop and fill it with warm, positive energy! So much fun - even the stuffed critters went outside to be purified in the sunshine.
I learned a lot this go-round too. First, I should have been more precise on dates and times. I hadn't decided what time to begin or when we would inventory where until late last Thursday, and that made things difficult for my helpers. Forgive me.
Other stuff I learned is probably not relevant to anyone but me, so I'm not going to post it here. Suffice it to say that inventory, properly done, is nothing for me to stress about anymore and is actually quite a good way to begin the new year. Happy 2011 everyone!
