This is an old pattern, as you can see from the picture of Elizabeth, but it continues to be popular in the shop. Takes just 110 yards of any nice worsted weight yarn - that's one skein of Noro Kureyon or Silk Garden. but you know, I'm thinking the new cashmere from Tahki Stacy Charles would be just the thing...
My daughter’s hands are always cold, and since she plays the violin, that can be a problem. She needed something to keep her hands warm and leave her fingers free – something that would be long enough even when she pulled her arms forward to hold her instrument. Gauntlets, of course, were the answer. A bit longer than fingerless gloves, these are as much fun to knit as they are to wear. And oh, how elegant they make you feel!
Materials: 110 yards worsted weight yarn - shown in Noro Kureyon
Size 7 double pointed needles (or size needed for correct gauge )
Gauge: 28 stitches per 4 inches in mock cable rib, unstretched.
Mock Cable Rib pattern:
Rounds 1-3: *knit 2 purl 2* repeat between *s the entire round
Round 4: insert right needle into next two stitches and knit them together, but leave both stitches on the left needle. Insert the right needle into the first stitch and knit it. Slip both stitches off needle.
Instructions: Cast on 40 stitches and divide stitches among 4 double pointed needles. (If you’re new to ribbing on dpns, it’s easier to begin each needle with knit 2, so you’d arrange your 40 stitches as follows: needles 1 and 3: 8 stitches; needles 2 and 4: 12 stitches.) Join into a round, marking beginning of round. Work in Mock Cable Rib pattern until piece measures 5 inches from beginning, ending with row 3 of pattern stitch.
Thumb gusset:
Round 1: Work a lifted increase knit wise, then knit the next stitch (see photos). Work another lifted increase and knit the second knit stitch. Purl 2. Continue around in mock cable rib, working Row 4 of the pattern stitch.
If a lifted increase is new to you, here's how to work it knitwise
Insert right needle into the right let of the stitch below the next stitch
...and knit it
Knit the next stitch. Two knit lifted increases completed
Round 2: Knit 4, purl 2. Continue around working Row 1 of pattern stitch.
Round 3: Work a lifted increase knitwise, then knit 3 stitches. Work a lifted increase, then knit 1 (6 knit stitches). Continue around working Row 2 of pattern stitch.
Round 4: Knit 6, purl 2. Continue around maintaining mock cable rib pattern
Round 5: Knit 2, work a lifted increase purlwise (lift the stitch below the next knit stitch – see photos), knit 2, work another lifted increase purlwise, knit 2, purl 2. Continue around.

Before you finish the round, When you get to that first set of three purl stitches in a row, work one purl stitch, slip the next 14 stitches onto a holder, place a marker on the needle, and purl the one purl stitch, and continue around, beginning Round 11 (Row 2 of pattern stitch.)
